Track Plan Tweaks 9/5/12
September 5, 2012 by markpaulson
Remember that you can double-click on this photo to enlarge it. I have been working on a schematic for the line, which I will be posting shortly. In the process, I discovered some small tweaks I wanted to do in the track plan. 1. In order for the forced perspective to work in upper Durango, I can’t have O Scale trains running right next to HO Scale houses, so I had to tunnel that curve behind Durango. I think in some earlier versions of the track plan I had it that way, but I went through once and tried to “daylight” as much track as possible. Track in tunnels can always be a potential problem. 2. At the San Juan Oil Co., I created a second spur. I need to be able to drop one car off, and pick another up, and the double spurs make that much easier.
I am new to the hobby (not the dream of “Some Day”) I love your layout as I have wanted to model Silverton for 40 years…. How hard do you think it would be to re-scale it to HO? I have a 15ft by 5 feet to work with (possibly stretch a few more square inches…

Hi Kleve,
It would probably be easier to work the track plan in HO than the On30 I’m trying to do. 5 feet is pretty narrow for return loops, even in HO, so a point to point plan would be best. I would strongly suggest looking into HOn3 for the narrow gauge look of the Colorado area. There is some really great equipment available from Blackstone Models. These locomotives and cars look great, and run great. The other caution is about the “duck under” in the center of my plan. I do hope to be able to keep this feature because with it I can replicate the beautiful Animas River canyon by the “high line”, but even using a backless office chair to roll under it is going to but tough. How high is your ceiling? The sloping nature of my ceiling is another great limitation for me. I only have about 4 feet of elevation along my north wall. Good luck with your layout, and keep me updated.
